General Information

The Alliance Française de Tulsa education program offers ongoing French classes at various levels. We provide small, intimate, relaxed French lessons, emphasizing rapid immersion to French.

Our “cours d’été” or shorter Summer classes are offered at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels for $170 for 6 or 8 meetings of 1 hour to 1.5 hours each (6-12 hours total) or $150 for members of Alliance Française de Tulsa.  Alternately, a third option, an intermediate/advanced conversation course will meet for four, 2 hour sessions on the dates outlined, below, at a special rate of $110 for new students, $90 for returning students.

Intermediate/Advanced Conversation 
A lively, intimate group reading and discussing culture, arts, society and global current events in French, using authentic French materials..  A casual, stress-free way to improve your fluency and ease in conversation.

About the instructor:  Nan Melton received her B.A. in French (Honors) from Rockhurst University, and worked for French multinational companies for many years.  She has hosted summer interns from TOTAL and enjoys her French family.   She is Director of Education for the Alliance Francaise de Tulsa, and has also taught for the Alliance Francaise de Kansas City, where she was also a Board member, and worked for the International Visitors Council.  She has taught Spanish and English as a Second Language.  For her most recent trip to France, she was invited to join ceremonies in September, 2017 in Chaumont, France, commemorating the arrival of American forces to serve in World War I.

B1 Lecture et conversation: le monde des artistes à travers la littérature

By reading short stories and excerpts from novels and essays by French nineteenth-century writers we will explore the Parisian world of art and learn about the lives of artists. All the assigned readings are available for free online. (The instructor will provide links to the material.)

About the instructor:  Danielle Carlotti-Smith teaches comparative literature in the Global Scholars program at the University of Tulsa. She holds a MA in French Cultural Studies from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in French from the University of Virginia. Her main areas of interest are nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, contemporary Francophone Caribbean and African literature, and French cinema.

A1 Beginners’ class, Débutants:  Become Francophile!

Notre objectif:  Rendre les étudiants autonomes dans la gestion de situations variées de la vie quotidienne. Our (class) objective is to familiarize students with ways to manage a variety of daily life encounters.  The instructor will provide course materials.

Leçons:  Vivre une ville, les problèmes du quotidien, nous organisons des événements; communautés durables, mots et expressions, info ou intox, innovations françaises, et aussi nous nous intéressons à la culture.

Class schedule: eight, weekly 1.5 hour meetings

The débutants class began on Tuesday, June 12, and the class meets weekly for eight 1.5 hour sessions from 6:00-7:30pm (June-July) and are held at the instructor’s midtown home, near TU.  A few alternate Saturday dates are offered for any missed class.

About the instructor:  Judy Glenn enjoys teaching beginning-level French from a current affairs angle. She holds a BA in liberal education with emphasis in marketing, languages and psychology from Langston University. She has experience to share on hosting international visitors, coordinating Sister cities efforts, web development, social media and French cinema.

Our Fall/Winter/Spring classes for all levels are priced at $200 for 8 meetings of 2 hours (16 hours total). And for repeat students, families, couples or members the cost is $185.

The classes will offer maximum opportunities to speak and participate – it will be lively, interactive and fun. Grammar concepts will be presented in the context of real life communication and culture, focusing on conversational skills and basic reading, writing and listening. A variety of media will be selected by the teacher to help develop these essential proficencies.

Beginning French/French for Travelers, A1
Planning a trip to France – or dreaming of one? Come gain essential survival skills and build your confidence to travel more comfortably! This class focuses on conversational French as well as etiquette and insight into culture. We’ll learn phrases you can use for dining out, shopping, sightseeing, getting around, asking questions, meeting people and more, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Grammar concepts are presented as tools to expand your horizons and go beyond just “phrasebook French.”
