Each January, families and friends across France gather around a golden, flaky galette to celebrate La FĂȘte des Rois. At its center is a playful ritual: a shared cake, a hidden fĂšve, and the moment of anticipation as one guest is crowned king or queen for the day. But the tradition carries a deeper meaning rooted in how the French approach community and the start of a new year.
January is also the season of prĂ©senter ses vĆux, the custom of formally sharing New Yearâs wishes throughout the month. Rather than confining goodwill to January 1, people take time all through January to reconnect, express gratitude for the year past, and offer wishes for the year ahead.
How it works in France:
In families and among friends, these wishes are often shared over a meal or drinks, with conversation lingering and no rush to move on. In workplaces, companies commonly host gatherings where leaders and colleagues exchange vĆux together, reinforcing a sense of belonging and shared purpose. In both settings, the emphasis is on presence, appreciation, and taking time to mark the transition into a new year.
Our Galette des Rois gathering reflects this spirit.
Join us for an afternoon of relaxed conversation and shared tradition. Alliance Française de Tulsa will provide la galette and cider. Members are invited to bring their favorite adult beverage to enjoy and share. If youâd like to contribute une galette or a bottle of Champagne or wine, please let us know.
Whether youâve celebrated this tradition before or are discovering it for the first time, this gathering offers a warm and authentic way to experience how the French welcome a new yearâtogether.
This event is for members of Alliance Française de Tulsa, but prospective members are welcome to come meet the community and experience the tradition firsthand.
